Hundreds of thousands of impoverished Americans suffer from food insecurity. Food insecurity means they are not certain where their next meal is coming from. We at Burch Farms recognize this need, and take action whenever possible. This is why the Mid-Atlantic Gleaning Network (MAGNET) is so important to us.
According to the US Department of Agriculture and local food banks’ statistics, it is estimated that more than 1,498,000 people are food insecure in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. MAGNET’s mission is to fight hunger by harvesting fresh fruits and vegetables from farms and orchards, such as Burch Farms.
During the past 20 years MAGNET has provided more than 65 million pounds of healthy fresh nutritious produce to the large numbers of poor and needy in the region around our nation’s capital. During most of that time Burch Farms and MAGNET have been friends and partners in this endeavor to address poverty in this key sector of our country.
